Hello, gorgeous! Welcome to yet another new post from The Fashion Downtown’s pocket, ‘The Preppy Chic Lookbook!’ In this post, we’ll be discussing what does the Preppy Chic style mean, some looks that I put together that falls under this niche and your favourite fictional characters who aced this style trend and you can look up to for inspiration!
The Preppy Chic style was evolved from the fashion of the American prep school uniforms from the ’70s and ’80s and they denote a classic, neat, understated and put together outfits. Preppy style comprises a lot of blouses, skirts, shift dresses, layers and feminine patterns like checks, tweed or polka dot. It is informal with a touch of formal style. Preppy style is above the average lazy dressing and the little elements that consist in a preppy outfit, makes it look like you did put in an effort in your clothing.

SOME PREPPY CHIC FITS PUT TOGETHER BY THE FASHION DOWNTOWN
CLASSIC WHITE BLOUSE WITH TWEED SKIRT
This outfit contains two classics from the Preppy rack, the classic white, ruffled blouse and a tweed skirt, which looks very co-ordinated (just what you want when you want to replicate fashion inspired from uniforms, right?) and chic.

The breakdown of this outfit would include a feminine white blouse, a tweed skirt, pop white sandals and a white baguette with golden accents. This look seems understated, not too loud and very put together, creating the perfect preppy dynamic!

LAYERING
Like I mentioned, layering plays a big part of the preppy chic lookbook, because it not only adds a statement element to an entire look but also eliminates the fact of lazy dressing and makes it look like you put in some effort in your outfit.

In this look, I styled a basic white cami top with baby blue flared denims and layered an oversized camel blazer to make the outfit more put together and polished.

I kept the accessories in the gold tone, matching the golden heels for a polished feel.

CREAM SHIRT AND CHECKED SKATER SKIRT
Since the whole preppy style emerged from schoolgirl fashion, a basic flowy chiffon shirt with a checked skirt literally is the poster for preppy fashion. Also, not to mention, this look screams BLAIR WALDORF, Queen of Preppy Chic!

I have styled a solid, chiffon cream shirt with a neutral checked skirt with brown and beige tones and accessorized it with the classic preppy accessory, a headband!

CAPE BLOUSE
Capes are considered as a staple winter piece while keeping preppy fashion in mind. They are understated yet create a statement subtly.

I have kept the entire outfit monotoned by pairing a black cape with black flared trousers. The cape sleeves and bell hem of the pants make for an interesting, statement combination. To add a pop of color, I accessorized the look with a pop orange handbag.

PREPPY CHIC FASHION INSPIRATION BY YOUR FAVOURITE FICTIONAL CHARACTERS
BLAIR WALDORF

Definitely Queen B has to be on the top of the list of preppy fashion because let’s face it, no one does it better than Blair Waldorf! Headbands to capes to skirts to dresses, Queen B is definitely the one stop destination for all things preppy!
CHER HOROWITZ

You think we’d be ‘Clueless’ enough to leave Cher out of the list? AS IF!!
Cher’s tailored, polished outfits and slick hair, with not to forget, THE BEST accessories, take the cake for being preppy as hell! (or heaven? Choose your poison!)
FALLON CARRINGTON

Give it to Fallon Carrington for the perfect display of the millennial preppy with a touch of classics!
